AKIMANA JEANNINE AND NISHIMWE IMMACULÉE SHINE IN THE OPENING MATCH OF THE SEASON
SECOND DIVISION WOMEN’S LEAGUE KICKS OFF WITH PROMISE AS GAKENKE LFC STARTS WITH A 2–1 WIN OVER KAYONZA WFC
The Second Division Women’s Football League officially kicked off last weekend, immediately showcasing an exciting level of competition, skill, and strong determination from all participating teams. This league is expected to contribute significantly to the development of women’s football in Rwanda and has already shown signs of being competitive and entertaining.
On January 11, 2026, matches of the opening round were played across different parts of the country. In a match held at Gakenke Stadium, Gakenke LFC hosted Kayonza WFC in a game highly anticipated by football fans in the region.
The match was marked by great intensity from both sides, with each team eager to begin the season on a winning note. Playing at home and strongly supported by their fans and club officials, Gakenke LFC started the game with high energy, allowing them to dominate possession and apply constant pressure on Kayonza WFC’s goal.
In the first half, Gakenke LFC scored the opening goal through Akimana Jeannine following a well organized attacking move, giving the home supporters an early reason to celebrate. Kayonza WFC responded positively and continued to search for an equalizer, making the match more competitive and entertaining.
In the second half, Nishimwe Immaculée scored Gakenke LFC’s second goal, underlining the team’s determination to secure all three points in their opening fixture. Kayonza WFC later pulled one goal back as a consolation, but it was not enough to deny Gakenke LFC the victory.
Gakenke LFC ended the match with a 2–1 win, earning three valuable points in their quest for promotion to the First Division. The game also highlighted the individual quality of Gakenke LFC players, particularly Akimana Jeannine and Nishimwe Immaculée, who played key roles in the opening day victory.
Following the match, Gakenke LFC supporters and club officials expressed great satisfaction, praising the players for their commitment and teamwork, while expressing confidence in the team’s performance as the season progresses.
